About this Presentation:
As one of the most endangered ecosystems, any remaining grasslands are
very important to protect. Bison are known to play a key role in the grassland ecosystem, but we don’t fully understand how native plants react to bison grazing in different seasons. This study focused on native grasslands in Saskatchewan and compared plant communities in areas grazed by bison vduring the growing season, the dormant season, and areas not grazed at all.
The study focused on plant diversity, evenness, richness, and bare ground cover. The results found clear differences in plant community responses between the grazing regimes — Specifically that diversity, evenness, and bare ground cover were all higher when bison grazed during the dormant season.
