Make a beautiful cup for yourself or for a special gift this holiday season!
In this workshop, instructor Jay Kimball will offer a brief overview of The People’s Cup project and share some examples of carved cups to inspire you. Then, you’ll get to work designing and carving your very own cup! If you’d like more time, you can take the cup home to finish carving it, as long as it is returned to the gallery for firing in a timely manner.
The People’s Cup is a community-engaged project by Jay Kimball at SILT Studio. Each porcelain cup is hand thrown and treated with a layer of black slip. Your task is to decorate the cup using "sgraffito", a technique where you scratch through the slip-covered surface to reveal the clay body beneath. You can use anything as a tool: a pencil, a pen, a pottery tool, a chopstick, or whatever else you'd like.
What you see is what you'll get. The black slip will remain black and the cup itself (and the lines, patterns, or texture you create through the slip) will transform into a delicate white upon firing.
This workshop is open to everyone ages 12 and up, but those aged 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. All skill levels welcome!
Included in the workshop fee: one People’s Cup, all materials and equipment, and the finishing and firing of the cup. Additional cups may be purchased at $55 each.
